As any prison warden will tell you, the one thing that can change a “so-so” jail into a “great” jail is the quality of its bars. And, I’m told, that the one thing that makes great jails “even greater” are “hip bars”. (And all this time I thought that bars going clear to the ceiling would be better than the ones that just go to hip level. Live and learn!)

Have you replaced some of your original Milford Track photos with different pictures? I’m looking for the picture of Maikael hiking on a mountain crest trail but it seems to be missing??

During your visit to the Royal Albatross Refuge did you happen to see a collection of 1980 Mercury Zephers? I owned one of those once upon a time; the worst 5-cyliner car I ever owned! (Oh, it had 6 cyliners but most often only 5 were actually working at any one time).

Yeah, we are in Dunedin right now. Wireless access if tough here, but I’ll post an update soon. Also, we didn’t get all the Milford photos uploaded correctly, but will do so as soon as we have better email access. It’s always a challenge.

I’m a friend of Jackie Robbins, who told me great things about your adventures. I’m watching your progres with great interest and more than a little envy.

My daughter, Shane, and her four boys (ages 5 to 11) are living in Dunedin, on the South Island of New Zealand. It is about 6 hours drive south of Christchurch on the eastern coast and the 4th largest city in NZ. If you have time to come our way, we would be most pleased to have you stay with us (if you don’t mind lots of noise and bunking). Dunedin was founded by Scotts and has a wet climate but many wildlife features: endangered yelloweyed penguin, a colony of royal albatross, small blue penguin, etc. If you have time to come our way, please get in touch.

You are crazy. Let me say this with more gusto; C-R-A-Z-Y. Liz, reading these earlier entries I thought we were similar travelers, good food, calm vistas etc. In fact, I was going to loan you my favorite answer when my husband asks me if I want to hike/paddle/rock climb in the wilderness.
“isn’t there a gondola?”
But now you are doing this, and I just don’t think you will be able to use my response with as much conviction as before. I can only chalk it up to sheer bravery, which I hope I could muster up when called upon.
